Dr Glyvyns Chinkhuntha, who passed away on August 10, 2007, established Tikondwe Freedom Gardens in 1982. First and foremost, this enterprise was for his own livelihood but his approach to farming, economics of production, and sustainability of the farming enterprise soon became noticed by neighbors, business community, academicians, politicians, and indeed, the international community. He was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree by the University of Malawi in honor of his work for fighting hunger and poverty. Since then, he had been lecturing to various groups of interested parties in Malawi (e.g. students, community groups, NGOs, study abroad groups) as well as at international conferences in Europe and the United States. His garden has grown from a personal venture to a community enterprise and has become an icon for addressing hunger, poverty, and production of organic food that is free of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. His food products have attracted markets in high profile institutions such as Kamuzu International Airport, shopping malls, and hotels within Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. The use of simple technologies that are affordable to every citizen in Malawi has shown that high yields in agriculture can become a reality with organic farming practices. The capability of Freedom Gardens to feed six neighboring villages demonstrates that knowledge of sustainable agriculture practices is power and that food production may be plentiful in Malawi. Dr. Chinkhuntha's legacy will always be remembered by the work that he accomplished in establishing Freedom Gardens.
