Dr. George Glasson is program leader for the Science Education graduate licensure program in the School of Education at Virginia Tech. He has taught science and environmental education courses in Malawi and conducted research with Malawian educators on curriculum development as related to teaching about connections between ecological sustainability and indigenous knowledge. Dr. Glasson's team recently published the research article, "Understanding the earth systems of Malawi: Ecological sustainability, culture, and place-based education," in the journal Science Education. Dr. Glasson was the faculty advisor for the Study Abroad program in Malawi during the summer of 2006. In this program, students investigated the inclusion of traditional ecological knowledge in the primary school science curriculum, teacher attitudes about indigenous knowledge, and literacy issues related to teaching science and environmental education.
Dr. Glasson coordinates the science education research and
curriculum development for the Mobile Malawi Project.
