Curriculum Overview

The Mobile Malawi Curriculum is designed to assist students in learning about sustainable agriculture using a mobile phone as a data gathering and communication device. The curriculum is based on the accumulated knowledge of organic farming techniques that were developed at Freedom Gardens by the late Dr. Glyvyns Chinkhuntha. Six lessons are included in the curriculum, including: Learning from Freedom Gardens, Irrigation, Seeding and Planting, Sunken Plots, Composting, Pest Control, and Planning a Sustainable Garden. Each lesson contains background information and a procedure for learning about organic farming by investigating farming practices at local garden. Students are involved in collecting and sharing data with their mobile phone and asking questions to expert farmers at Freedom Gardens and educators at Domasi College and Virginia Tech (USA). Shared data includes descriptions and photos of existing garden sites as related to the lesson topics.
