  Freedom Gardens

Tikondwe Freedom Gardens was established by Dr. Glyvyns Chinkhuntha in 1982 in a location along a swamp fed by spring water from the mountains in the Dowa district, located near the capital city of Lilongwe. Dr. Chinkhuntha started with a 100 square meter size garden and a small grass thatched shelter, and now the garden has expanded to 50 acres. His grass-thatched shelter still exists as a monument on Freedom Gardens, which has been replaced by modern brick walled and tin roofed houses, including guest and food storage facilities.

Freedom Gardens is an organic farm that relies on gravity-fed irrigation, composting, and farming practices that are free of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. All types of food, both local and exotic grow in this area, including maize, bananas, citrus fruits, strawberries, broccoli, sugar cane, peas, spices, and many other fruits and vegetables.  The local community provides all the labor requirements for Freedom Gardens as people from the neighborhood come to work for money or food. This arrangement has also acted as an educational opportunity for those who come to work in this garden; many villagers have borrowed the science and technology knowledge for establishing their own small enterprises both upstream and downstream.

In difficult times Freedom Gardens is capable of supporting six surrounding villages. Normally maize is harvest once a year but irrigation raises productivity to three or more times per year.  The market produce is also sold in hotels, markets, and shopping malls in Lilongwe as well the Kamuzu International Airport.
